Procyon lotor insularis is an endemic subspecies of raccoon found only on Cozumel Island, Mexico. This subspecies is much smaller than its mainland counterpart, weighing on average only 3-4 kg. Synonyms for Procyon lotor insularis include Cozumel Raccoon, Island Raccoon, and Cozumel Island Raccoon. The Cozumel Raccoon is known for its distinctive appearance with a bushy tail and dark circles around its eyes. It is also recognized for its agile and curious nature. However, this subspecies is threatened due to habitat loss, hunting, and invasive predators such as feral cats and dogs. Efforts are being made to conserve and protect this unique and endangered raccoon subspecies.
