Rhythmic movement disorder is a condition where an individual exhibits repetitive, coordinated movements including head banging, body rocking and rolling, and even leg banging. This disorder is also known as Jactatio Capitis Nocturna. It is a sleep disorder that usually occurs during the transition between sleep and wakefulness. There are various synonyms that are used to describe this condition, including sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder, sleep-related headbanging, somnambulistic rhythmical movement disorder, nocturnal myoclonus and sleep-related involuntary movements. Despite the different terminologies, the symptoms and behavior exhibited by an individual with the disorder are the same.
